Honorable Mention
If I Were God
Dane Hebert

I’m not asking for the job,
but if I were God,

poetry web sites
would point heavenly upward,
intact,
firm and high.

I would deliver,
finally,
the milk and honey
promised to Israel.

And as God,
I would not have need
for points.

I would have all the points,
ever wanted or desired,
from the very

beginning.

~

There would be no homeless people,
wars,
or need for taxes.

If I were God,

I would not allow little girls
to blossom
until after entering
college

or a nunnery.

Young boys in high school
lose too many valuable SAT points
while pondering the blossoming
of two tiny points

of lesser consequence in

the end.
